Assessing Patient-Centered Care: One Approach to Health Disparities Education
After reviewing Smith’s 2013 article, “Reaching for Cultural Competence” and Wilkerson, Fung, May, and Elliot’s 2010 article, “Assessing Patient-Centered Care: One Approach to Health Disparities Education,” describe how the nurse can apply a community assessment tool to improve health outcomes and reduce health care disparity, including barriers to optimal wellness for vulnerable populations. For example, potential barriers for our military personnel are survivor’s guilt, or reluctance to seek help due to the perceived stigma of being labeled with a mental health disorder. How might this vulnerable population be identified, and how might these barriers be overcome?
